March 8, 2006 B. Iris Tanner, a Medford-based cabaret singer and songwriter who's been called "genuinely clever and deliciously quirky" by CDbabel.com reviewers, will perform her solo cabaret show, MORE Trouble with Men as part of the opening night festivities of the 4-day "March is Cabaret Month" festival sponsored by the Boston Association of Cabaret Artists (BACA). Combining classic standards with her own witty, yet touching original songs, Iris and her music director, Joe Della Penna, weave a tongue-in-cheek web of songs and tales from the dark side of love. The show is at 9:00 p.m on Thursday, March 23rd. at Jimmy Tingle's Off Broadway Theater, 255 Elm Street, Davis Square, Somerville, MA. For tickets, call 866-811-4111 or go to www.jtoffbroadway.com.
Although based on a show performed this past June to celebrate the release of Iris's second CD, MORE Trouble with Men has been retitled, revamped and expanded so those who have seen its predecessor (The Trouble with Men) will find plenty of new material to enjoy. Sharing the bill for the evening are father/daughter duo Phil and Gabriela Kassel and local cabaret favorite John Abernathy performing the songs of Hoagy Carmichael. The Cabaret Celebration continues on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with 16 additonal performers and a Gala Benefit performance on Saturday night. A full schedule is available at www.bostoncabaret.org.
Iris has been a Medford resident since 1987. A member of ASCAP, she has been writing and performing her songs in the greater Boston area since 1998. "Most of my originals depict me poking fun at myself in one way or another," she says. Some have subject matter best suited to mature audiences ("I'm addicted to double entendres."), but there is nothing overt that will offend younger spectators or their parents. She has recorded two CDs of her original songs. The most recent, Magnum Opuss! features six guest singers from the Boston cabaret community. It was recorded at Doug Hammer's Dreamworld Productions studio in Lynn and released in June 2005. Her other CD, Fresh-Cut Iris, captures a live performance from 2003. Both are available from www.cdbaby.com and will be on sale at the show on the 23rd. In addition, all songs from both CDs can be found on iTunes, MusicNet.com, MSNMusic, Rhapsody, and many other online music sources too numerous to mention here. For more information, see Iris's web site at www.b-iris.com.
Iris will also be participating in this year's West Medford Open Studios, held April 29 and 30. More details will soon be available at www.wmos.org.
